The aunts
Las tías (The Aunts) is an 8-episode documentary series about women who were part of our everyday world and lived their family stories without becoming mothers. Each episode is the portrait of an aunt seen through an intergenerational dialogue with her nieces.
The series is a patchwork of the lives of women who left a deep mark on those around them, becoming, often without realizing it, agents of change in the role of women within the family.
Episode 1 – Aunt Teté
At a time when women were beginning to step outside the home, Teté devoted much of her life to work. In an intimate conversation with her niece Sofía, she reflects on the decisions that shaped her story and the marks they left on her personal life. An honest portrait of choice, freedom, and family legacy.
Episode 2 – Aunt Zaida
In the Florida region, surrounded by greenery, scents, and “little creatures”, Aunt Zaida lived freely. Single and self-determined, she built her own home in the countryside while cultivating a world rooted in sacred plants. Together with her nieces Rosanna and Soledad, we open her treasure chest and discover the legacy she left behind.
Episode 3 – Aunt Manina
Stylish and free, Aunt Manina enjoys her body and her time without asking permission. In conversation with her niece Marianela, she reflects on love, marriage, and freedom, and on the courage it takes to follow your own path in the face of family judgment.
Episode 4 – Aunt Sara
This episode takes us to Melo, Aunt Sara’s hometown. Alongside her nieces Lucía and Lourdes, we draw her story out of silence: a borderland woman whose life and Afrofeminist legacy surface through echoes of memory, threads of recollection, and a sense of pride that crosses generations.
Episode 5 – Aunt Olga
Shameless, fun, and full of life — that’s how her niece Lucía describes Aunt Olga. Through laughter and shared confidences, aunt and niece talk about her life choices, love affairs, and audacity to follow her instincts, while aware that social judgment is unavoidable.
Episode 6 – Aunt Julia
Lucía, Alicia, and Adriana spent much of their childhood under Aunt Julia’s care. Together, the three sisters revisit their family memories to discover who Aunt Julia really was: irreverent for her time, a woman of few words, yet capable of fiercely protective love.
Episode 7 – Aunt Laura
Jose shines in Uruguayan women’s basketball, but behind her journey stands Aunt Lala: a former player, now a role model, who still steps onto courts. Through conversations, laughter, and shared memories, we discover how Aunt Lala shaped Jose — teaching her discipline, a passion for the game, and a deep love for life and for herself.
Episode 8 – Aunt Katusha
Aunt Katusha, a painter and lover of life, moved through her days among books, brushes, and small pleasures. For Matilde (her niece) and Valentina (her grand-niece), her memory makes clear that surrendering to a”good life” as a woman can be an act of rebellion. Katusha’s brushstrokes mark a family legacy that these women neither want nor can afford to ignore.
